Using tele-mental health (or tele-psychology, tele-therapy, tele-behavioral health, etc.) means receiving psychotherapy from a distance and through a technological device (phone, computer, tablet).
Individuals and couples can receive psychotherapy services from the comfort of their homes, thereby facilitating access to treatment. It offers privacy and confidentiality and is bound by the same strict local and federal laws as “in-office, face-to-face” therapy.
Because psychotherapy involves a personal relationship, it may seem odd to think about using a computer or phone to start (or resume) this type of treatment. However, most people adjust very easily to this modality and develop a perfectly functioning therapeutic relationship with their psychotherapist.
Research has demonstrated that tele-therapy sessions are as effective as in-person psychotherapy in various settings, and some people feel that for them it works even better, but online care is not suitable for every person. Some people need more comprehensive treatment. Also, in certain moments the person might need a different modality in order to receive the best treatment available. Because of this, we will assess if this is the right modality for you before moving forward. Upon determining that tele-therapy is the right option for you, I will ask that you fill out an informed consent to begin our sessions.
To best optimize your online sessions:
PRIVACY – Find a space where you will feel comfortable that nobody can hear you. This is very important for this modality to work effectively as feeling free to communicate is essential to your work.
REMINDERS – While at home it is easy to lose track of time. Don’t let that happen and interfere with the convenience of a tele-therapy session. Make sure to set a reminder on your phone or calendar with your session day and time.
TIME – Stop what you are doing 10-15 minutes before your session so that you can get ready for it (avoid “rushing” into it) and make sure your internet connection is working properly so that you can troubleshoot prior to the start of our session.
