Here is a taste of some of the things that nature offers us:
- A walk in a wooded area, known as Shinrin – Yoku (Forest bath) reduces blood pressure and stress, improves concentration and strengthens memory while combating depression.
- The fascination generated by nature has the capacity to restore directed and sustained attention, both necessary in our academic and professional life.
- Negative ions present in nature, have the capacity to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety levels, improving our cognitive functioning. These ions are found abundantly in forests and water courses (waterfalls, ocean breaking waves).
Have you experienced the pleasure of walking barefoot in a nice sandy beach or the energetic but peaceful experience of walking in the woods? Well, these are not just nice moments but actually they mean much more for our bodies and our minds.
In my years of experience practicing psychotherapy I have observed how current lifestyle is creating pressure and promoting material needs that don’t appear to belong to our essence as human beings. The modern society tends to disconnect us from our natural environments where we can live in harmony. For example, many research studies already show the correlation between the cellphone use, stress levels, and depression. Our distress, loneliness and maladjusted behaviors are often connected with the demands of a lifestyle discordant with our real needs.
I am very interested in this line of thought. These resources integrated in our work can provide relief and enhance the individual’s capacities to manage their circumstances in healthier ways.
